Subject: Invitation for an interactive work-shop on ‘Exports of Education & Entertainment Services from India: Potential & Challenges’  and Advantage Health care India 2015 ‘at the Taj Vivanta, Chennai on September 4, 2015 (Friday)

As you are aware India’s success story in services and services exports has been unique. In the past two decades, India’s services trade has grown rapidly contributing to GDP, to trade and investment, to employment and skilling. Other than traditional services, India has made huge strides in knowledge-based services. Prominent amongst such services is that of education services, especially higher education services. The role of higher education in leveraging knowledge and innovation and in providing skill sets towards hi-tech manufacturing and high value added services is indisputable. Further, the role of Higher Education services for India in the context of job creation domestically, human resource and skill development, earning (and saving) of foreign exchange as well as creating an employable workforce is of immense importance.

Similarly, the audio-visual service sector is one of the fastest-growing service sectors in India. India also has the potential of exporting post-production facilities, computer animations and graphics. Since the Indian audio-visual industry caters to a niche audience, India does not face any direct competition from major players such as the US.
In the above context, an interactive work-shop on ‘Exports of Education & Entertainment Services from India: Potential & Challenges’  is being organized by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and FICCI on September 4, 2015 (Friday) at the Taj Vivanta in Chennai.

Commerce Secretary, Department of Commerce, GOI, Ms Rita A. Teaotia, IAS, has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest at this workshop. Also, the work-shop will have participation from other eminent speakers and guests as well, from the Government and Industry, the decision makers and stakeholders who will focus on various dimensions of these two sectors with their insightful and valuable thoughts and presentations which will enhance the efficiency, productivity and global competitiveness of the sectors.

Further, it is expected to set forth the vision for the education and audio-visual services sectors in the medium and long term and chalk out the way forward in terms of the steps needed to be taken to address various challenges and assess gaps in existing procedural/administrative/regulatory areas.
Your participation will be valuable to arrive at a roadmap of reforms required to meet global challenges and harness opportunities that lie ahead not only to diversify India’s services exports but also to position India as a key player in world services trade.

Therefore, request you to kindly in this inter-active work-shop and kindly confirm your participation with an email to Ms. Jyoti Kaur, DDG at and copy to

Government of India launches job portal for MSME sector

The government  launched an online portal for job seekers in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.

The portal – www.Eex.Dcmsme.Gov.In – will help the industry to find skilled manpower.

Ministry has developed this employment exchange portal for industries where job seekers can find employers or vice-versa.

The portal would also help industry reduce time and cost of searches for skilled manpower.

Currently this is only for manufacturing sector. Job seekers will not have to pay any fees. The industry would have to pay fees to use this portal.

The ministry is also thinking to provide this facility for services sector as well.

The ministry said that unemployed youth and even those who are in some kind of jobs continuously expressed concern that they were not aware about suitable opportunities particularly in the manufacturing sector at worker or operator level.

There has been momentum on skilling to reap the demographic dividend. The typical way of finding factory workers is to put up a poster next to the unit and hope that some unemployed skilled person would see it. While this may have worked in the past but this is no longer an efficient way in this digital age.
The MSME sector provides employment to a large section of population and contributes about 45 percent in the country’s total exports and about 40 percent in the manufacturing sector

The stage is set for the Modi government to signal its seriousness about transforming India’s under performing healthcare system

With expectations running high about the Narendra Modi government’s first full-year budget, the stage is set for the centre to signal its seriousness about transforming India’s under performing healthcare system and committing investments for a long-term payoff for all Indians. By ramping up investments in healthcare, the government will have the perfect opportunity to start a virtuous cycle of health. It will improve productivity, enable greater consumption and boost economic growth, as well as help the Make in India campaign become a reality.

Healthcare reform can protect Indians from out-of-pocket expenditure burden, create 15 million additional health services jobs by 2025 and allow the country to emerge as a global hub for innovative, low-cost health products and services. As we have seen, a business-as-usual approach to health won’t work and can hurt India’s future growth, development and competitiveness. According to one estimate, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) alone will cost India $6.2 trillion by 2030.
